P2V Migration for Software Assurance is a simple free tool from Microsoft which uses the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit and Sysinternals Disk2VHD to convert a user’s existing Windows XP or newer client environment to a virtual hard disk then automates the delivery of an updated and personalized Windows 7 operating system containing a virtual machine with the user’s previous Windows environment, applications and Web browser.

The user’s previous virtual desktop retains its existing management components, domain membership and policies. The process also publishes applications and the browser for the user to access them seamlessly within Windows 7′s start menu. This tool works with all the retail versions of Windows and not compatible with OEM versions of Windows.

Microsoft is billing this new tool as a solution for IT pros that have problems moving certain users off Windows XP or Windows Vista because of a dependency on applications that won’t run in Windows 7.

There are many free tools available for Windows, but not all are portable. You can make any non-portable application portable through virtualization. Cameyo is a freeware tool which lets you shrink all the files of a regular application in a single package that can be used portably on any Windows system you run it on. Cameyo lets you enclose any application in its own virtual environment and then create a package of your applications in portable mode.

Once installed, click on the capture installation to start creating a package. Cameyo first takes a capture of your system before you install the application. In the next step, install all your application which you want to make portable and then finally take another capture. Application virtualization technology packages entire applications into a single standalone executable, eliminating the need to install.

Cameyo also features an editor for the virtualized packages it creates. This allows you to load a virtualized program and check the data it contains, both files and the entries that are deployed in the registry of the host system.

Recently we had covered a feature of Docs.com where you could create a simple resume with the work and education information on your Facebook account. If you have large number of friends in your Facebook account, you can now easily analyse your friend mix based on gender, age, and location. Docs.com allows you to create a Friends Chart based on the information of your friends available in Facebook.

Docs.com will access your friends’ Facebook profile information to instantly create a formatted and editable Friends Chart. To create this chart, log into Docs.com and then select Chart your Friends option.

Docs will then ask permission to access your Facebook account and your profile. Docs.com will create an Excel chart with detailed information about your friends, their age groups, location, gender etc.

You can see different tabs at the bottom showing different information. Friends Chart is nice way to analyse your Facebook friends.

Just like other web browsers, Internet Explorer 8 also features the private browsing mode. InPrivate Browsing prevents Internet Explorer from storing data about your browsing session. You can also enable InPrivate Filtering which helps prevent website content providers from collecting information about sites you visit. Websites now contain ads and lots of third party tools which collect information about the sites you visit. With filtering you can prevent this from happening.

InPrivate Filtering in IE8 works by analyzing web content on the webpages you visit, and if it sees the same content being used on a number of websites, it will give you the option to allow or block that content. You can also choose to have InPrivate Filtering automatically block any content provider or third-party website it detects, or you can choose to turn off InPrivate Filtering.

To turn on InPrivate Filtering and change the settings, select the Safety button on in the IE8 toolbar and then select InPrivate Filtering.

If you want to block content, then select the InPrivate Filtering settings, here you can select filtering options and which all content providers to block.

There is also option to automatically block content. Next time you use InPrivate mode, make sure you have turned on filtering.
